The conventional Christmas tree is a surface assembly composed of multiple gate valves. Its primary role is to manage the controlled release of oil or gas from a well.
Typically, an ANC includes one or two master valves, a pair of side (wing) valves, and a swab (piston) valve. The upper and lower master valves are responsible for sealing off the well. The side valves, located on the left and right, also help control the well’s flow and can be shut off when equipment needs to be deployed into the well—for instance, when running a pressure and temperature logger via wireline.
The swab valve sits at the top of the Christmas tree and enables vertical tool access into the production tubing when opened.
